Applying to join the group

I am always happy to consider applications to join the group. Please read carefully the information below before contacting me with a CV and a brief explanation why you would like to join our group.

Funded PhD positions

Funded PhD positions are generally available through the joint ISMB programmes. Deadlines for application to these programmes vary but are usually around December-March (for entry in the following October). Please see the departmental website for current studentship opportunities.

If you have already been accepted for the Wellcome Trust 4-year PhD Interdisciplinary Programme ,the BBSRC London Interdisciplinary Biosciences PhD consortium studentships scheme, or the ISMB Interdisciplinary MRC PhD Programme you will be able to see my proposals for PhD projects/ rotation projects in the corresponding lists.

Self-funded PhD applicants

We accept applications from students with a strong undergraduate degree (2.1 and above or equivalent) or a strong Masters degree (at least Merit or equivalent) from recognised Institutions around the world. Both part-time and full-time PhD applicants are welcome. Students who are not native speakers of English must fulfill the eligibility criteria listed on the College's website.

Please feel free to contact me regarding potential projects but I will require the following before considering your application: a) Two academic references, b) a CV, c) a statement on why you are interested in working in my group and which areas you are mostly attracted to, d) an informal interview (could be done remotely over Skype), e) a statement on how you are planning to fund your studies in London. If you pass this stage, you should then apply through the formal application process that is available online from the Birkbeck webpages. Your application will then be considered separately by a graduate committee in the department who will also decide on whether you should be called for a formal interview. As an additional requirement for a computational PhD, I will ask you to sit a 30-minute test that is meant to assess your aptitude for computational work (this test may not be necessary for people with obvious programming qualifications). The fees for the current academic year can be found under: Birkbeck Biological Sciences PhD / MPhil Please also note that the cost of living in London is estimated at approximately 10,000 GBP per annum.

Internships - undergraduate and other

Applications for internships from both undergraduate and graduate students are welcome. You will need to provide the following: a) a CV, b) at least one academic reference, c) a statement explaining why you want to do an internship in my group and how you are planning to fund yourself. Note that due to space and equipment limitations it may not always be possible to host a student.

Postdoctoral positions

There are currently no funded postdoctoral positions available in my lab.
