INFORMATION FOR APPLICANTS TO AUTISTICA'S CHARLES SHARLAND GRANT SCHEME

I am grateful to Autistica for selecting me to act as a potential host for their Charles Sharland Grant Scheme for Autistic Researchers. Below is some information that potential applicants may find useful.

Our research is entirely computer-based. Our work involves writing computer programs and using other people's software to answer questions of biological interest. Due to the nature of our work, we can usually carry out much of it remotely, either on a local laptop/PC or via access to the College servers.

Our scientific focus is at the molecular level. We try to integrate large-scale data from various resources in order to further our understanding of how cells work and communicate and the origin of disorders.

There are two ways to join my lab under this scheme:

a) By pursuing a Masters in Research (MRes) course in Bioinformatics at Birkbeck College, London. Two-thirds of the MRes course credits are dedicated to a research project that I will help develop and supervise. Our Masters course is available in both full-time and part-time modes.

b) By joining the group as an intern and being directly nvolved with a research project, (this assumes that the applicant has sufficient familiarity with programming to be able to carry out some basic bioinformatics research tasks).

The best way to discuss these possibilities and suggestions for projects would be to come and meet me in person! You can find my email and contact address in the "CONTACT" tab above.
